The preface to The Phoenix Nest (1593), “Set foorth by R.S. of the Inner Temple, Gentleman”, and published eleven years before the frontispiece to the 1604 Hamlet, is this letter-string reference to “E.C.O.”:

It is a fact, in fact, that the Latin for “E.C.O.” is: “Edwardus Comes Oxoniensis” (Edward, our Friend, from Oxford).
